Wednesday 03/08 Soweto

We didn’t get a lot of sleep on the plane, but a pretty smooth flight and we have just been met at Oliver Tambo Airport by Peter, Tumelo and Tadeus and were driven to Roodeport.

14.34 off to Vilakazi street in Soweto. This is the street where both Archbiship Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela used to live (both Nobel laureates).

We enjoyed picking up some souvenirs at the market stalls, and then we visited the Hector Peterson museum, and the Regina mundi church. Our guide Dan, was a real character who used lots of group participation to show us around. Learnt it was the venue for the truth and reconciliation.

Thursday 04/08

We went to the Sterkfontein caves today. They’re limestone caves where they found a complete skeleton of Austropithicus africensis which is over 2 million years old. Our knowledgable guide Tshepiso gave us lots of information and explained how the skeletons came to be there. It was sad to think they fell down holes on the surface into the underground caves and couldn’t get out.

Friday 05/08

We went to Lesedi Cultural Village to see some traditional dancing.

Saturday 06/08
We got an early morning lift from Peter and Tendai to the O. R. Tambo International Airport. It was quick through the check in and Security. We had breakfast before we boarded.
We were not impressed by the food service.
We flew on one of the older propeller driven planes. Charles, Tshepo and Emma met us at the airport.
We are staying with them at their home in Boronyana close to the Boronyana River.
